USE OF PURPLE-RED LEAF CHERRY PLUM 'PISSARDII' AND ITS HYBRIDS IN GARDENING

Krymsk Experimental-Breeding Station of the Russian Institute of Plants Growing is currently isolating the forms of purple leaf plum – Prunus pissardii from the stone fruit plants gene pool and breeding new purple-red leaf cultivars and hybrids with higher manifestations of adaptability and decorativeness for use in design. The paper provides information about the results of breeding purple-red leaf forms of cherry plum and its hybrids and gives recommendations for their use in gardening and in various types of design, orchards and nurseries. The following vigorous cultivars of purple-red leaf cherry plum and its hybrids are recommended for use in groups and alleys: ‘Zarevo’, ‘Vesenneye Plamya’, ‘Krasnaya Lenta’, ‘Tsiteli Drosha’, ‘Elita 18-16-45’, ‘Krasnaya Kometa’, ‘Alyye Parusa’; for use in hedges and borders: ‘Vesenneye Plamya’, ‘Krasnaya Lenta’, ‘Krasnyy Bordyur’; in order to obtain fruits: ‘Lykhny’, ‘Sukhumi’, ‘Abkhazskaya 7’, ‘Alyye Parusa’, hybrid 18-16-45.
